Beth F. Milles to Join Consortium as Head of MFA Directing Program

PROVIDENCE, RI: The Brown/Trinity Rep Consortium is proud to welcome Beth F. Milles to its team as she takes the helm of the MFA Directing Program this fall. Milles, who will also be a Trinity Rep Associate Director, succeeds Kevin Moriarty, who was named the Artistic Director of the Dallas Theater Center.  She will begin work at the Consortium this month.

“The caliber of intellect and imagination at Brown is so high, and the soul and the artistic work at Trinity Rep are thrilling,” said Milles, who expressed her hopes to inspire students to “imagine more than what they think is possible on the stage.”

“For me, theater will always be the place where possibility and impossibility can convene,” she said.

Milles comes to the Consortium from Cornell University where she has been on the faculty as Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance. Most recent directing work: writer/director Tim Robbins and Adam Simon’s Carnage for The Actors’ Gang in Los Angeles. Other Actors’ Gang credits include Carson Kreitzer’s Self Defense (3 LA Weekly Awards), the world premiere of Private Battle (3 LA Weekly nominations), and her own adaptation of Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid (4 Ovation Awards). She directed the world premiere of Nero: Another Golden Rome at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco (developed in collaboration with playwright Steven Sater and composer Duncan Sheik). Other directing credits include Julia Sweeney’s And God Said “Ha” on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre. She is the founder of Banter Company, which focuses on the adaptation of classical theatre for the modern audience. She specializes in physical theatre and development of devised movement based work, as well as the tradition of farce and the contemporization of the Commedia dell’Arte. She has directed and developed new work at many theatres including Playwrights Horizons, The Juilliard School, The Sundance Theatre Institute, The Mark Taper Forum, The Guthrie Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, ASK Theatre Projects, Naked Angels, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, and The Kitchen Theatre. Beth is a graduate of Cornell University and the ART Institute for Advanced Training at Harvard University.

Artistic Director Curt Columbus states, “I am thrilled that Beth F. Milles has joined the Brown/Trinity Consortium. She brings with her to our program her unparalleled experience in nurturing young artists, as well as her substantial body of work as a director and a creative force in the American theater.  I have no doubt that Beth will prove to be an invaluable addition to the Brown/Trinity family.”
