Michael McGarty

Set Designer

Mr. McGarty has designed many shows at Trinity Rep in his 22-year association with the company, including last season’s production of Richard III. He most recently designed the premiere of The Secret Letters of Jackie and Marilyn at Pittsburgh Public Theater. Other recent productions include: Dead Man Walking, NY City Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Opera Pacific, and the subsequent national tour; Paper Doll, Pittsburgh Public Theater; The Invention of Love, Wilma Theater; and the premieres of The Stendhal Syndrome by Terrence McNally and the opera The End of the Affair by Jake Heggie and Heather McDonald. Past Broadway productions include Master Class by Terrence McNally, the revival of Wait Until Dark, and Julia Sweeney’s God Said Ha. He has worked extensively off-Broadway and at regional theaters around the country including: the NY Shakespeare Festival, Old Globe Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, Seattle Rep, Geffen Playhouse, Mark Taper Forum, Philadelphia Theatre Co., Pasadena Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Bay Street Theatre and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. McGarty received the 2000 Philadelphia Barrymore Award for his set design. He teaches design at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design.
