Apprentice Program

For more than 20 years, Trinity Rep has committed to developing the future leaders of the American theater with professional training programs in administrative, artistic, and production fields. What began as internships for recent college graduates has evolved into robust season-long apprenticeships which provide comprehensive training for individuals early in their career. Apprentices will launch their theater careers by training and working alongside staff as integral parts of the team. Apprentices will begin in late September and learn alongside their staff colleagues for 35 weeks.

Apprentices work in all areas of Trinity Rep, including Arts Admin, Sound, Education, Electrics, Scenic/Props, Costumes, Production Management, Stage Management.*

Details and Benefits

Weekly Salary: Apprentices will receive a weekly post-tax stipend totaling approximately $250.

Housing: All apprentices will live in provided furnished housing for their duration of their time at Trinity Rep. Living expenses including rent, utilities (heat, electricity, water, and WIFI), kitchen supplies (pots, pans, dishes), and basic household supplies (cleaning supplies, toilet paper, etc.) The apprentice housing is located within walking distance of the theater. Parking is also available for those with cars.

Seminars: In addition to specific training in your selected department, all apprentices will also spend time with other departments through professional development seminars.

Other: Complimentary tickets, staff discounts on merchandise and concessions, free tuition for adult-level acting classes, health insurance, strong community of staff and former interns

Expectations and Application Process

Ideal candidates will have completed their undergraduate studies, or have equivalent experience. All apprentices must be 21 years old by September of the year they begin their apprenticeship.

The Costumes Apprentice works as a full time member of the costume department.  The apprentice will switch off from either working in the costume shop, building and altering costumes, or working backstage on show call as a wardrobe assistant. This apprentice has the opportunity to build a piece from muslin all the way to a finished garment, as well as learning more about alterations, finishing work, wig maintenance, and crafts.  

Learning Objective 

The main objective of this program is to teach apprentices with hands on experiences in a safe working environment. The apprentice will be involved in every facet of theatrical costuming. It is an opportunity to see how each production has different costuming needs, how different designers and shop staff approach solutions while collaborating with multiple departments, designers and actors. 

Qualifications

  • 21+ years of age.  
  • Basic familiarity with costume shop/laundry equipment and concepts. 

Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working at heights up to 25’  
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. 

2022-23 Season application forms will be available in winter 2021-22.

Apprentices will not be able to work in other positions at the theater during their contracted 35 weeks, but overtime may be required on occasion and will be compensated at time + a half. Depending on their schedule, an apprentice may be able to take additional work outside the theater as long as it does not interfere with their hours at Trinity Rep.
