Trinity Repertory Company volunteer internship program offers intensive professional training at a Tony Award-winning regional theater. Interns are an integral part of our theater company and serve alongside our staff in artistic, administrative, and production departments.
The following internships are offered: Artistic Management Internship, Education Internship, Marketing Internship, Development Internship, Graphic Design Internship, Stage Management Internship, Costume Internship, Electrics Internship, Sound Internship, and Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs Internship.

Due to the extensive nature of the internship, as most departments require 40 hours a week, it is unlikely that an intern would be able to get a second job. However, there may be opportunities for overhire employment depending on your schedule, interests and skill level.

Our administrative interns are the backbone of our artistic community. Make no mistake – these internships aren’t about getting coffee or making photocopies. Our interns serve as an integral part of our institution and are an investment in our company. Each internship is an active part of Trinity Rep, with hands-on experience, one-on-one mentorship opportunities and numerous educational opportunities to promote growth with a variety of skills earned.
• Maintain new play correspondence and relationships between the department and literary agents, organizing new play readings/workshops, and reading unsolicited script submissions
• Teach and assist with classes in the education department
• Manage and assist with Prologues, post-show discussions, Context and Conversation, lobby displays for main-stage shows, and responsive community engagement programming specific to each season
• Conduct dramaturgical research for Trinity Rep mainstage productions and MFA shows as necessary
• Assist with research on engagement activities and potential partners
• Various administrative tasks
The artistic management intern assists the associate artistic director, education director, and director of community engagement in a variety of ways.
• Assist in classes for Trinity Rep’s Young Actors Studio after-school program (student age ranges from 5-18)
• Teach and direct off-site residency programs at local schools
• Assist with Project Discovery student matinees (over 30 student matinees a year, average attendance for each approx. 500), including recruiting volunteer ushers and teacher correspondence
• Research, construct, and co-author teacher study guides for all shows, as well as research plays in development for future production
• Moderate and help to administer post-show discussions
• Assist with education outreach efforts, including Write Here! Write Now! Student Play Festival.
• Support artistic staff on such tasks as backstage tours, special events and other functions as needed
• Participate in and record notes for education staff meetings to shape and plan future activities
• Moderate and assist with adult studio classes as needed
• Support Trinity Rep Active Imagination Network (TRAIN), a drama program for children and adults with disabilities
• Various administrative tasks as needed
• Manage, with increasing independence, the marketing and press strategy for Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program productions. This includes writing show descriptions, managing social media, writing and distributing press releases, expense budgeting, revenue reporting, and analysis.
• Assist with opening night coordination (7 per season) and special events for the Trinity Rep season
• Assist with planning and maintaining Trinity Rep social media presence, including responding to comments and messages along with the rest of the marketing team
• Perform marketing research as needed
• Assist with maintenance of website, using Word Press content management system
• Assist with creating content for blog posts and program book articles
• Assist with the creation of emails, created with Emma email program
• Assist with planning, filming and editing promotional videos (prior video experience not required)
• Provide general administrative support for the marketing and PR department
• The candidate must have excellent communication skills (both oral and written) and have strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Familiarity with Photoshop, video editing a plus,
• The marketing intern works with the director of marketing & PR and digital marketing coordinator, as well as the graphic designer and their intern.
• Responsible for the graphic design, illustration, and layout of promotional materials for Brown/Trinity Rep MFA productions and Education Department productions and projects
• Graphic design and layout of flyers, brochures, advertising, e-cards and other promotional materials for Trinity Rep productions and projects as needed
• Assist with special events as needed
• Provide general support for the marketing and PR department
• The candidate must have excellent communication skills (both oral and written) and have good working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Microsoft Office
• Provide general administrative support for the department
• Coordinate and manage communications related to Trinity Rep’s Open Access Theater outreach program, which provides free tickets to constituents served by area nonprofits
• Support outreach, donor cultivation, and other special events by creating and sending invitations, collecting RSVPs, and providing staff assistance at all events, and overall support with logistical details
• Research prospects, both individual and institutional (corporations/foundations), as needed
• Monitor front-of-house reports facilitating communication with donors and prospects
• Help with gift processing and acknowledgment, and updating donor records in fundraising database as needed
• Assist with grants writing and assembling report materials for funders and sponsors
• Write occasional development-related articles for the theater’s programs
• Applicants should be detail-oriented and well-organized with strong communication skills (writing and interpersonal) and a demonstrated interest in the arts and/or nonprofit administration. Customer service experience preferred. Microsoft Word and basic Microsoft Excel required.
Production internships at Trinity Rep are a hands-on experience. We want interns to leave with practical working knowledge of their field of internship as well as the confidence to move ahead to a job in that field. Production interns work as part of their department alongside professionals who have been in their field for years. We believe that the best way to learn how to do something is to do it and that’s what our internships focus on. Throughout the year you will get a chance to interact with people from other departments, as well as out-of-town designers and artists from around the country. Trinity Rep production interns are given opportunities to make great contacts, and to learn about other fields of interest. We are looking for individuals who are hungry to learn, and to ask questions. Our production departments have to function as a team so we need individuals that are willing to work like that. Please read specific intern descriptions for more information.
The electrics intern is the fifth member of the Electrics Department. This intern assists in the preparation and maintenance of equipment and is involved in all hang and focus calls in both theater spaces. They may be tasked with running spotlight or light board for some productions. Opportunities to learn various skills including soldering, wiring practices, ETC Ion programming and basic Vectorworks and Lightwright. In hopes for furthering experience level, interns may be asked to take on lighting duties for various special events in and around the theatre. This internship requires a team player, an eagerness to learn, and a positive attitude. Must be able to work at heights and on extension and A-frame ladders, and able to lift 50lbs. Recent college graduates with experience in electrics and lighting design are preferred.
The sound intern will join the three other members of the sound department and work to install sound systems for all shows. The Intern will also be responsible for operating the audio console for multiple shows. Opportunities to learn about live mixing are available if interested. In hopes for furthering experience level, interns may be asked to take on special events. A positive ‘team player’ attitude, as well as an aptitude and desire to learn, are essential to this position. Applicant should be comfortable working at heights and on ladders and possess the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Recent college graduates experienced in running shows and installing systems with an interest in sound design and/or engineering are preferred.
The stage management intern is a vital member of the stage management team ranging from 3-5 people on any given show. This intern will be in all rehearsals assisting the stage manager with paperwork, props tracking, being on book, and whatever else the Stage Manager needs to be done. This person will also become part of the run crew when the show goes into performances. This intern gets to work alongside and learn from AEA Stage Managers from around the country and will build many contacts. In order to give this internship even more experience, interns may be asked to assist with special events. This internship requires a person who possesses strong organizational skills, who is not afraid to take initiative while still being a team player, who is hungry to learn, and who has a great sense of humor. Recent college graduates or people with equivalent experience in stage management are preferred.
The costume intern is a valuable member of the six-person costume staff at Trinity Rep. This intern is responsible for helping to build costumes for all main stage shows as well as serving as wardrobe/dresser for the run of some productions. This intern has the opportunity to build a piece from muslin all the way to a finished garment, as well as learning more about alterations, finishing work, wig maintenance, and crafts. In hopes of furthering experience level, interns may be asked to take on special events. This internship requires someone who is willing to work well with others as part of a team, who has a great attitude, and someone who can keep his or herself on the task at all times. Must have strong organizational skills, be able to work at heights, and lift 50 lbs. Recent college graduates with costuming, wardrobe, and sewing experience preferred.
The Brown/Trinity Rep intern is the fifth member of the production and administrative staff for Brown/Trinity Rep. The intern will work in all areas of production for the MFA Program from space maintenance, design meetings, run crew, and everything in between. In addition to having hands-on experience in all production departments, the intern will gain office experience while assisting in the daily administration of this department.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to experience the full spectrum of jobs relating to design, production, and administration and no two days are ever the same. The desired applicant should have experience and/or interest in all areas of production, including electrics, costumes, stage management, and carpentry. Organizational and administrative skills are a plus. The intern will interact with the Brown/Trinity Rep production staff, artistic and administrative staff, designers, faculty, and graduate students. The specific projects and tasks of the internship will vary based on the program schedule, the intern’s interests and abilities, and the needs of the productions. Tasks may include:
• Assist with load-ins, electrics, work notes, tech rehearsals, operating lighting and sound consoles, wardrobe (sewing a plus), strike, carpentry, and maintaining and cleaning the Pell Chafee Performance Center (PCPC) between show runs;
• Serve as a production assistant, run crew, and/or wardrobe crew for several major PCPC productions throughout the year;
• Assist in the office with scheduling, classroom maintenance, welcoming VIP guests, monitoring rehearsal reports, filing documents;
• Attend design and productions meetings;
• Support numerous productions in Brown/Trinity Rep’s MFA Program, including studio projects, solo work, recitals, showcase, and special events;
• Possible opportunities to serve as stage manager or assistant director on MFA productions as extra work beyond the typical schedule and requirements of the internship;
• Be an active part of the daily life of the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs, plus chances to work with other departments of Trinity Rep.
