WHAT DO VOLUNTEER USHERS DO?
Volunteer duties may include giving directions in the theater, stuffing and/or passing out programs, and seating patrons. If you have mobility concerns, please let us know in advance. Our ushers are essential to a positive theater experience.
HOW CAN I BECOME AN USHER?
If you are a new volunteer, please e-mail Steve Lehrer at email@example.com or leave a message at (401) 521-1100 x 509. Be sure to include a telephone number, e-mail address, and mailing address. We can begin the scheduling process once we have this information.
WHAT REQUIREMENTS ARE THERE TO USHER?
All ushers are required to volunteer for ten performances this season. While the guideline is that each usher volunteers for two performances per show in the Chace theater and one performance per show in the Dowling theater, this is flexible if we need extra assistance elsewhere.
HOW DO I SCHEDULE/CHANGE/CANCEL DATES?
To schedule or change an ushering assignment, please click here and fill out your first name, last name, and email address on file. You will be emailed a personal link to your online usher portal. The list of available performances for which we currently need help this season can be viewed by visiting the link below. If you cannot make it to a performance for any reason, we ask that you contact House Management or cancel your performance online at least a week before your scheduled shift. Should you have to change an assignment, please visit your usher portal to choose a new shift. Please do not arrive to volunteer at a performance that you have not been scheduled for. WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Ushers are required to arrive no later than one hour prior to the performance for which they are scheduled. Your call time is listed for each performance in your usher portal. A short orientation is given to all ushers before each performance. That meeting is mandatory, even for longtime ushers, as information specific to that performance will be shared, in addition to general information about the theater. Ushers who do not arrive on time for the meeting may not be asked to stay for that performance. We ask that you anticipate delays due to traffic, weather, or parking and adjust your schedule accordingly so that you are able to arrive on time for the start of your shift.
WHERE CAN I PARK?
Street parking is available with meters running until 9:00 pm Monday – Saturday. Discounts may be available at the Civic Center Parking Garage (165 Washington Street, next door to Trinity Rep), please inquire with House Management in advance for more details. Several additional parking options are located in the area around Trinity Rep.
CAN I WATCH THE PERFORMANCE?
We do our best to accommodate ushers with seats to the performance they are working. However, some shows will sell out and seating cannot be guaranteed for ushers. Should this occur, we will allow you to return to watch another performance if available.
WHAT IS TRINITY REP’S USHER REWARDS PROGRAM?
For every three shifts successfully completed, each usher will earn a ticket voucher to be used for any show during the rest of the current season. Vouchers are subject to blackout dates, which can be found in the most up-to-date scheduling information below. Any vouchers earned during the run of the final show in the season will be honored during the next season (usher vouchers will not be redeemable for The Prince of Providence during our 2019-20 season). Additionally, any remaining show balances towards the three shift reward left at the end of the season will be carried over to next season. Ushers may also purchase staff rate tickets, excluding Saturday evenings and subject to blackout dates. Ushers are limited to no more than ten staff rate tickets to A Christmas Carol, which are available during the month of November only. For more information, call the Box Office at (401) 351-4242. Lastly, ushers are offered free water, soda, coffee, and hot tea at each performance they volunteer at. All other concessions (besides alcohol, which is not allowed during usher shifts) are half price.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A SHIFT?
If you miss three shifts during one season, you will kindly be asked to leave our ushering program. In extreme circumstances, such as a family emergency or natural disaster, contact Steve Lehrer at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message at (401) 521-1100 x 509 for special consideration. Additionally, we ask that you cancel any shifts at least one week before the scheduled time. If you cancel within one week, this will be counted as missing your shift, as it is much more difficult to find coverage with short notice. If you are able to find your own coverage, it will not count as a missed shift. Lastly, by the end of the season, any usher who hasn’t fulfilled the ten performance requirement will have anything below the requirement counted as missed shifts.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Please wear a white dress or tennis/polo shirt and black pants or skirt. Also, please make sure to wear comfortable shoes (not sneakers).
