What is the role of a theater critic? Workshop sessions will explore this question, and introduce young journalists to professional theater, while instructing them how to observe, analyze, construct, write, and refine a theater critique. Students will have the opportunity to attend a rehearsal, a technical rehearsal, and a performance of a selected Trinity Rep production as a means to recognize the contributions of the playwright, director, actors, designers, and technical crew. With the focus on strengthening their analytical thinking and writing skills, students will begin to develop their writers’ voices and perspectives, understand the importance of criticism, and compose critical responses as knowledgeable “next generation” theater critics.

This year’s class will focus on Trinity Rep’s production of La Cage Aux Folles, culminating in their own reviews of the show.
