Friends, this is hard.

It’s been over six months since our last in-person performance in the theater. And this week, we announced that it will not be practical to produce again on the timeline we had hoped and previously announced. Right now, in-person production is on pause until fall 2021.

This week, we’ve said goodbye to many more beloved staff members, and told our artists and artisans that we may not have work for them until at least a year from now.

We are grieving. We are grieving the loss of our friends, our co-workers, our co-creators, our collaborators, our time with you, the stories we were going to share. We are grieving for our field and our sister arts organizations and live performance venues that have been devastated by this pandemic.

We are grieving for what was. But we have hope for what will be.

We have hope for the joy that this year’s free, online A Christmas Carol will bring. For families who will be able to share the experience with loved ones on the other side of our country. For schools that will be able to access a virtual field trip experience.

We have hope for the new ways we are finding to create art virtually and connect with people and the community at-large, true to our mission of reinventing the public square.

We have hope for the young people who are discovering the power of the arts with Trinity Rep’s teaching artists both in-person and online. For lifting spirits and fostering creativity during this non-traditional school year.

We have hope for the next generation of artists that are being trained in the Brown/Trinity MFA programs. Their resilience, creativity, innovation, and training in this specific environment will reshape the American theater for decades to come.

We have hope for the change that will come, as Trinity Rep works to become more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. For collectively discovering ways to do better and be better.

Through the tears, we are finding a path forward to a brighter future. The important work continues, and the shows – the in-person shows – will go on after this intermission.

We hope you will join us on this journey. Your support in this moment means the world to us.

Warmly,

Curt Columbus, Tom Parrish, and all your friends at Trinity Rep
