We met our goal! A $120,000 holiday gift to help our neighbors in need.

On December 15th, Trinity Rep met the $120,000 matching challenge to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Starting on Thanksgiving, the Rhode Island Foundation matched the first $60,000 in contributions to Trinity Rep with a grant to the Food Bank. And then Ocean State Job Lot matched the second $60,000 contributed to Trinity Rep with an equivalent donation of food.

We are so grateful for the incredible generosity of the over 1,800 people who helped unlock this match by making gifts to Trinity Rep during this period. While we have achieved this goal, the need of both organizations is still great, and we encourage you to consider supporting both, if you can.

Our Holiday Tradition to Help End Hunger

Since 2006, at the end of every performance of Trinity Rep’s A Christmas Carol, the actor playing Ebenezer Scrooge has stepped forward and asked the audience to help support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. As they’ve exited the theater, audience members have looked into their hearts and pockets and dropped coins, bills, and checks into the collection coffers. Last year, their donations totaled over $60,000 and in total, Christmas Carol audience members have contributed over $665,000 to the Food Bank since the tradition began.

With the shift to producing the show online, we didn’t want to lose the opportunity to raise funds and awareness for this extraordinary organization that provides such critical support for our community. Thanks to the Rhode Island Foundation, we found a new way forward.

$120,000 Matching Challenge

In November, the Rhode Island Foundation announced that they would match the first $60,000 in gifts made to Trinity Rep between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve 2020 with a $60,000 grant to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. That match was achieved on December 6th, and then Ocean State Job Lot matched the next $60,000 in donations with a donation of food valued at the same amount. We hit our goal on December 15th!

While contributions to Trinity Rep are always important, they are even more critical at this time when we have no ticket revenue. Likewise, demand for the Food Bank’s services are hitting unprecedented levels and their need is stronger than ever. Watch Rhode Island Foundation President & CEO Neil D. Steinberg on The Rhode Show announce this partnership, read the Foundation’s announcement here, or the announcement about Ocean State Job Lot’s match.
